SoccerSums

Teaching children maths through real football statistics. From discovery and product positioning to a working proof of concept.

About SoccerSums

SoccerSums was conceived by a football statistician who works with major TV broadcasters, generating the stats that support commentators and presenters during live matches. The idea: use real football data to teach children maths, combining something they love with something they need to learn.

The concept needed more than just development. It needed proper product thinking. Who is this for? What does each audience need? How does it generate revenue? We were brought in to answer those questions and then build a proof of concept to test the answers.

The Challenge

SoccerSums had a compelling idea but no product structure around it. An app that teaches kids maths through football sounds great, but who pays for it? What do teachers need that's different from what parents need? How do football clubs benefit? And how do you design something that's genuinely educational while still feeling like a game?

These aren't development questions. They're product questions. Answering them before writing any code is the difference between an app that gets funded and one that doesn't.

What we did

Discovery & Positioning

We ran a full discovery phase: stakeholder analysis, user research, competitor analysis, feature identification and product positioning. We identified four distinct personas (children, teachers, parents and football clubs) and designed the product around what each one needed. Critically, we identified how the product could be monetised through the football club relationship.

Design & Prototype

User journeys, wireframes and a full interactive prototype in Adobe XD. The prototype was tested with real users and refined before any development started. This gave SoccerSums a tangible product to demonstrate to potential investors and club partners.

Proof of Concept

A working React Native app with an Umbraco headless CMS backend. Real football statistics powering maths challenges, league tables and progress tracking. The POC proved the concept worked and gave SoccerSums something real to put in front of investors.

The outcome

SoccerSums now has a clearly positioned product with four defined audiences, a viable monetisation strategy and a working proof of concept that demonstrates the idea to investors and potential partners. User testing showed that every respondent said their child would regularly use the app and that they considered it a useful educational tool.

We continue to work with SoccerSums as they secure funding and prepare for a full launch.
