About the Organisation
The National Farmers’ Union (NFU) represents over 46,000 farmers and growers across England and Wales. They provide a strong voice for the farming community, offering advocacy, support, and information that helps members navigate a fast-changing agricultural landscape.
The Challenge
With multiple platforms serving distinct user groups, including public audiences, internal teams, and regional organisations - the NFU needed a series of platform upgrades that would bring consistency, performance, and long-term stability to their digital estate. This included:
- A major upgrade of their main public website, NFU Online, from Umbraco 8 to 13
- Upgrading the internal Intranet from Umbraco 7 to 13
- Upgrading NFU Cymru’s website from Umbraco 8 to 13
These upgrades needed to be delivered with minimal disruption while maintaining content integrity, accessibility, and internal stakeholder confidence.

The Approach
Appcentric was appointed to lead the end-to-end upgrade of these platforms, ensuring all transitions were carefully managed and technically sound. Key steps included:
- Auditing the existing websites and intranet structures to assess risk and complexity
- Delivering a clean migration path to Umbraco 13 for each platform
- Maintaining design consistency while streamlining performance and usability
Coordinating with NFU teams across regions to support content workflows and internal training
The Outcome
The upgraded platforms now offer improved stability, faster performance, and a future-ready CMS foundation. NFU’s digital estate is better positioned to support internal communication, public engagement, and regional flexibility all while reducing the technical debt of legacy versions.
Appcentric continues to provide a responsive support service, assisting with incidents, change requests, design queries, feature development, and ongoing improvements keeping NFU’s platforms connected, current, and aligned with their organisational goals.
